OVERVIEW
THE MAX-SAFE AUDIBLE WARNING™ SYSTEM IS PROVIDED EITHER STANDALONE, OR AS AN OPTIONAL EXTRA FOR ALL OF OUR MAX-SAFE PRODUCTS.
The MAX-SAFE Audible Warning system allows for human voice recorded messages to be played, based on particular programmed events. Being a human voice with a focused message, it is much more effective than a buzzer – or multiple buzzers – going off. The product can be used to play messages within the cabin to the driver, and/or messages can be played externally to persons outside of the vehicle.
The advantage of having an audible warning system is that the warning can provide specific information about the risk – it’s not a general beeping noise where drivers have to work out what that beeping warning is actually about. The system can also be linked to flashing lights.
There is also the potential for this type of warning system to protect vulnerable road users who randomly or occasionally find themselves in higher risk situations. For example, large trucks or buses using the MAX-SAFE Audible Warning can alert people outside the vehicle of their intention to turn left. This helps ameliorate a situation where a VRU may be located within a blindspot (rectifiable through various MAX-SAFE Watch radars).
HOW THE MAX-SAFE AUDIBLE WARNING SYSTEM WORKS
The MAX-SAFE Audible Warning system is a combined hardware (speaker) and software solution. Up to 2 speakers can be mounted on the left-hand side of the vehicle. Messages can be pre-recorded and installed as part of the vehicles’ software and programmed to trigger during certain vehicle actions.
The Audible Warning can be automatically played when the vehicle’s left side indicator is pressed; for example, the audio message “Warning, truck turning left. Keep clear.” may be played. Cyclists and pedestrians will hear the spoken warning and be aware they need to move to the side/footpath, so as not to be in the danger zone of the left-turning vehicle. In this situation, the message will automatically switch off once the vehicle turns, and the indicator resets.
A message can also be set to play on a loop, requiring the driver to manually switch off the message. As an example, the Brisbane City Council uses this solution on their garbage trucks, to allow the driver to press a button to play the message: “Warning, power lines down. Please stay clear of the area.” on a constant loop, until it is switched off.
