PROTECTING VULNERABLE ROAD USERS

Most heavy vehicles have front corner blind spots. Anyone on the left-hand corner is likely below the level of the left-hand side-mirror. Equally, right-side mirrors are more designed for checking what’s behind in the next lane. The pillar of the vehicle blocks some of the view and high cabs and small windscreens limit the ability of drivers to see someone close to the righthand corner. This makes intersections and pedestrian crossings risky for cyclists and motorbike riders who think they are safe because they are not in “front” of a heavy vehicle. However, they may not be seen by the driver, nor know of their intention to turn because they may not be able to see the indicators.

A truck driver can take off and accidentally hit them, particularly if the driver sees a traffic light change before a VRU does. The added risk is a vehicle has to move forward before the driver starts turning, leading a VRU to think the vehicle is driving straight ahead. With these risks, heavy vehicles need safety solutions to protect people and property near the front corners of their vehicle and keep our communities safer. This will save the physical, financial and emotional hardship caused by injuries and fatalities.

Using the latest advances in AI and Machine Learning (ML) the MAX-SAFE Corner View solution detects people within a configurable zone to the front corners of the vehicle.

HOW IT WORKS

The MAX-SAFE Corner View solution uses state-ofthe-art camera technology to assist drivers to move a vehicle safely forward to turn corners.
A camera unit is mounted on the front corner/s of the cabin and pointed downwards and outwards. It scans the incoming image to determine if it recognises a person within a defined danger zone, either moving or stationary. It does this by using in-built AI (Artificial Intelligence). On detection of a person within the danger zone, the system reacts instantaneously by triggering a range of options.

A recordable monitor can be added (not mandatory) across any of the options to provide the driver with vision of what the camera is seeing (with the danger zone outlined) – while capturing video for later retrieval. The MAX-SAFE Corner View solution protects vulnerable road users and other vehicles, giving drivers greater confidence and certainty when taking
off or turning corners at low speed. The MAX-SAFE Corner View solution reveals people in the Corner blind spot zones, notifying the driver and providing greater safety for all. Individual units can be installed for either or both sides.

HOW FITTED

The system has been designed to be mounted on the front corners of a vehicle’s cabin or roof and can be installed in new fleet builds or easily retrofitted. After it is installed, the system is calibrated before use.

• PLACEMENT: The camera is mounted on the front corners of a vehicle’s cabin or roof.
• CABLING: The cables are routed along the vehicle’s body and into the cab.
• INSTALLATION OF THE WARNING SYSTEM: The buzzer and light are mounted on the A-pillar.
